How the tip calculator works

A tip calculator separates three decisions that are often rushed: the bill amount, the tip rate, and the number of people sharing the total. It reports the tip, the combined total, and an equal per-person amount in Canadian-dollar formatting.

Method and behaviour

The tip equals the entered bill multiplied by the percentage divided by 100. The total equals the bill plus that tip, and the per-person amount equals the total divided by the number of people. Calculations use the entered decimal values before the displayed currency amounts are rounded to cents.

The page assumes the tip applies to the entire entered bill. Local practice may instead use the pre-tax subtotal, exclude fees, or apply different rates to different items. The equal split also ignores what each person ordered.

Worked example

For an $80 bill, an 18% tip is $14.40 and the total is $94.40. Split equally between two people, the displayed share is $47.20 per person.

Useful for

  • Checking a restaurant tip before payment
  • Comparing two possible tip rates
  • Splitting one combined total equally
  • Explaining how a percentage changes the bill

Important limitations

  • The tool does not know whether tax or service charges are already included
  • Equal division may not match individual orders
  • Your payment method or venue may round the final transaction differently

Questions specific to this tool

Does the tip apply before or after tax?

It applies to the exact bill amount you enter. Choose the pre-tax subtotal or after-tax total according to your preference and local practice.

Does it account for a service charge?

No. If a service charge is already included, decide whether any additional tip is appropriate before entering a rate.

Why can the split differ by a cent?

Displayed currency is rounded to cents. Some payment workflows allocate a rounding remainder to one person.
