How the ai token cost & monthly budget calculator works
Estimate the charge for the text tokens you enter, then test whether a repeated monthly workload fits a token budget. This calculator uses your manual rates and quantities. It cannot predict an unseen request, the number of requests needed to finish a task, or your complete provider invoice.
Method and behaviour
Input tokens are supplied to a model; output tokens are generated by it. Keep the two quantities separate because their rates may differ. Let I and O be billable tokens per request, Pi and Po be currency units per million tokens, N be requests per month, and B be an optional budget in the same currency. Input charge = I × Pi / 1,000,000; output charge = O × Po / 1,000,000; combined charge C is their sum. Monthly charge = N × C; monthly token volumes = N × I and N × O. With B supplied and C positive, whole requests supported = floor(B / C).
The model assumes the same token quantities on every request and one uniform rate for each token category. A monthly result describes that scenario, not a prediction of variable real-world traffic. Use the input and output breakdown to see which side contributes most; compare the monthly charge with your token budget, while reserving money separately for excluded costs.
Tokens are not interchangeable with words or characters. OpenAI explains that token boundaries depend on the model encoding and language. It also documents that reasoning tokens can count as billed output even though they are absent from the visible answer. These are OpenAI-specific explanations; check the usage definitions and billing rules for your own provider. A word counter or a short-looking response is not a billable-token measurement.
Use measured billable usage from representative requests when available. A guessed quantity is a planning assumption, not an observation. Enter only the billable quantities to which your chosen uniform rates apply. Do not combine discounted cached input with ordinary input under one rate unless that single rate actually applies to the entire quantity. No prompts, API keys, accounts or billing documents are needed here.
Counts must be whole numbers from 0 through 1,000,000,000. Each price can range from 0 through 1,000,000 with up to six decimal places. A budget can range from 0 through 1,000,000,000,000 with up to two decimal places. Use plain decimal notation without grouping separators or exponents. Blank required fields remain missing; a blank budget means not supplied. A zero budget is valid.
Calculations retain exact scaled-integer precision internally. Display amounts round half up to at most six decimals, with at least two decimals shown. A positive amount below 0.000001 is displayed as a less-than threshold, never as zero. Monthly multiplication and the budget comparison use unrounded values. Choosing CAD or USD changes the currency label only: enter both rates and any budget in that currency yourself.
A request is not a completed task. A workflow can require several requests, retries, or human rework before it succeeds. Compare quality requirements and successful completion as well as token expense. A lower token charge alone does not establish better value; do not remove important instructions or safety checks merely to reduce tokens.
Official reference pages were checked on October 6, 2026. No provider prices are embedded in this calculator. Check the relevant provider terms when choosing your rates; the examples below are hypothetical arithmetic scenarios.
Worked example
Hypothetical Example A: 10,000 input tokens at 1 per million and 2,000 output tokens at 4 per million produce input charge 0.010, output charge 0.008, and combined charge 0.018 per request in the selected currency. At 1,000 requests, monthly charge is 18.00. A budget of 20 supports 1,111 whole requests: 1,111 cost 19.998, while 1,112 cost 20.016. Example B changes only output to 4,000 tokens. Charge rises to 0.026 per request and 26.00 per month; the same budget supports 769 requests. Doubling output did not double the total because input charge stayed unchanged. Decimal-boundary Example C: 1,000,000 input tokens at 0.01 per million and zero output cost 0.01 per request; three requests cost 0.03 and a 0.03 budget supports exactly three requests. None of these rates is a provider quotation.
Useful for
- Separating input and output contributions for a known request
- Planning a monthly token allowance for a uniform workload
- Testing how output length assumptions change a budget
- Comparing hypothetical usage scenarios in one chosen currency
Important limitations
- Text-token charges only; no automatic tokenization, live rate feeds, provider presets or exchange-rate conversion.
- Separate cached-input/cache-write pricing and tiered, batch, promotional or service-tier rules are excluded.
- Separately charged tools, search, storage, infrastructure, image, audio, video and other non-token charges are excluded.
- Subscriptions, credits, taxes and currency conversion are excluded, not assumed to cost zero. Actual invoices can also follow different rounding and billing arrangements.
- No before-task prediction, ROI score, model-quality ranking or guarantee of successful task completion.
Questions specific to this tool
Why can my provider invoice differ?
This page multiplies two manually entered text-token quantities by two uniform rates. Your invoice can include the excluded categories, variable requests, credits, taxes, or different billing rules. Reconcile against provider usage records and current terms.
What happens when the charge is zero?
The result is zero under the entered assumptions. A zero token charge cannot produce a useful budget-based request capacity. It does not establish that an entire service is free or unlimited.
Does switching CAD and USD convert my rates?
No. It changes the label and clears any previous result. You must enter prices and a budget in the selected currency; no exchange rate is supplied.
Is my input saved or sent to a model?
Calculator values stay in browser memory. They are not sent to a model, analytics events, browser storage, or the page URL. Copy and download are user-initiated. The wider website can make separate analytics and advertising requests described in its privacy notices.
